Your Cruise Vacation Planner, From First Idea to Sail Day

A cruise is one of the easiest vacations to take and one of the easiest to plan badly. This cruise vacation planner puts every decision in order, with a timeline that starts a year or more before you sail and ends when you walk up the gangway. Follow it and nothing important will be left to the last week.

Most planning problems come from doing things in the wrong order: booking flights before the cruise is confirmed, choosing a cabin before checking the ship, or discovering a passport problem a month before departure. The pages here are arranged so each step builds on the one before.

Three Planning Mistakes to Avoid

  • Booking flights before the cruise is confirmed. Secure the cabin first, then fly to fit it.
  • Leaving documents to the end. A passport that expires too soon, or a name that does not match the booking, can stop you at the pier.
  • Budgeting for the fare alone. Gratuities, flights, the hotel night and extras often add as much again; plan them from the start.

Stay Ahead of the Deals

Planning early lets you watch for promotions without being rushed. Sale periods such as Wave Season early in the year are when many travelers book, and the Mister Cruise cruise-offers newsletter sends offers as they appear. Cruise Vacation Planning: Quick Answers

How far ahead should I start planning a cruise?

For popular dates, suites, family cabins and Alaska or Europe in summer, start about a year ahead. For flexible travelers on mainstream short cruises, a few months can be enough. See when to plan.

What is the first decision to make?

Who is going and when you can travel. Those two answers narrow the choice of region, line and ship more than anything else.

Do I need a cruise vacation planner, or can I do it myself?

You can do it yourself, and this site shows how. A cruise advisor saves time, compares lines for you and helps if something goes wrong. Our cruise advisors at Mister Cruise plan cruises free of charge to you; start with the free quote form.
